EP 20: Are You Being Dim-Witted When it Comes to Growing Your Business?

“When you get into that ‘do-it-myself’ mode, you miss out on some of the biggest lessons and the biggest leaps forward.”

(19:31 – 19:39) – Tobin Slaven

While obstacles are a given in the life of every entrepreneur, those who make the leaps ahead are the ones who tap into the expertise of someone else who has already faced that obstacle and found their way around it.

When you think you can figure things out yourself, you end up stuck in a rut. You may save money on the front end by not hiring a coach, but how much time have you wasted? Remember that the only non-renewable resource is time.

“When you need help, find someone who has faced that specific obstacle… and is on the other side, so they can guide you across more quickly.”

(3:34 – 3:47) – Tobin Slaven

Tobin and I have been working together to create a way to marry marketing and sales. In the process, we have learned a lot in this evolution of building an online coaching business. One of those things is that most coaches are being “DIM-witted.”

DIM stands for “Do It Myself”

Most coaches and consultants have already spent a lot of money on various programs that didn’t measure up to what they expected and feel gun shy about investing in another program. We tend, by human nature, to want to retreat and go back to basics.

“If we do it by ourselves without the guidance of somebody else, then we are shooting ourselves in the foot. We already know, because we are coaches and consultants, that it’s important to always have one ourselves.”

(4:51 – 5:08) – Janet Clark, The Freedom Shift

How the “DIM-witted” Idea Came About

If we are diligent, we can learn so much from our mistakes. Tobin spent time journaling the lessons he learned in his entrepreneurial journey that he really wished he had learned sooner. A pattern emerged. He, and so many others tend to jump over the earlier stages of sales and marketing. The right information at the wrong time can be so damaging to a business.  It is important to do things in the right order.

Most coaches and consultants are focused on the last phase, which is using funnels, automation, and other means to deliver their solution in a one-to-many format. They skip over the first phase, which is having one-on-one conversations with the right people to deliver their solution in a one-to-one format. They feel that stage is too much work.

Wouldn’t it be great if you could scale the first phase? We have figured out a way to do just that. We now have a lead-flow process where we bring salespeople in to work with the coach or consultant so they can get out of the DIM mode and accelerate what’s happening in that initial phase. It’s completely possible to grow your business to seven figures just by scaling phase one.

If you are struggling with ads and funnels and your calendar is filled up with the wrong leads, then you’re probably attempting that last stage when you should be going back to the basics of having one-on-one conversations with individuals who are your ideal client.

Sales MAP (Sales Momentum Accelerator Program)

Many coaches and consultants aren’t experts in sales and marketing. A great way to remedy this is in your scaling process is to put a team around you that DOES enjoy the sale.

The “Sales MAP” (Sales Momentum Accelerator Program) is a way for coaches to get back to basics. They can start focusing on getting more information from their ideal prospects while bringing a salesperson on board to find more of those ideal prospects for them.

Don’t Go It Alone

No matter where you’re at in your business nor how good you think you are at it, hiring a coach who has been doing this process for longer than you have can skyrocket your confidence and your results.
